Happy New Year everyone! What is your resolution? Are you feeling bloated, fat, or completely overindulged from the holidays?
Have you ever thought about juicing or a juice cleanse?
Juicing intrigues me. You see people drinking green drinks, loving them, glowing in their vitality and you think….oh wow, that’s a dark green drink. It has to taste horrible. Like a cold broccoli slushie. It can’t possibly fill you up.
But, people SWEAR by juicing and spend small fortunes buying just the right blenders and getting their ingredients or going to juice bars. StyleBlueprint Nashville is big on juicing and they have lots of juicing establishments. I did some research and found one here in Louisville, one very popular one: LifeBar.
Here are their claims:
- Fresh organic greens
- Nutrient dense
- Meal on the go
I met with owner Chase Barmore. His own story is a testament to juicing. He worked at a steakhouse, cutting meat and eating meat. He had terrible allergies, felt sick and bloated. He decided to quit that job and not only go vegan, but only eat raw foods (which is a story for another time). Then, he opened up LifeBar.
Chase working his magic.
He took me behind the scenes at LifeBar and I watched as he prepared a menagerie of drinks. LifeBar offers smoothies, juices and blends. They also sell “healthy life shots,” such as wheatgrass or immune shots and “enhancer blends” for energy and protein needs.
Everything is fresh and organic at the life bar. There are fresh vegetables and fruits pre-cut behind the counter. Other fruits are frozen and scooped out like ice cream into the smoothies.
There are plenty of powders and tonics and bitters as well. There is definitely a science to these drinks.
I was a the LifeBar at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday and it was bustling. People coming to get drinks to go, others getting drinks and staying. He has customers that come every day, sometimes twice a day.
LifeBar offers a three-day cleanse if you are interested doing a New Year’s Detox. It consists of six drinks a day. Here is the basic menu:
As we chatted, he was busy the entire time concocting my drinks. I lost track after the first one exactly what was going on. That is usually better for me, just to drink or eat what somebody hands me and not worry about what is in it.
He made me these three drinks: Green for Life (darkest green), It’s Easy Being Green (Kermit green) and The Healer (purple).
I liked them all, and strangely, they did not taste anything like they looked. Meaning, the purple drink you would think would taste like berries, but it did not at all. So, be open to the taste and know that some of them definitely grow on you.
As part of my own personal experiment, when I drank these (no, I did not drink all of them), I had not eaten lunch and was exhausted at 2 p.m. This absolutely did the trick, tiding me over until dinner at 7 p.m. I was full and I had energy the rest of the afternoon. I gave the smoothies to my kids as their afternoon snack. After they got over the initial “it’s not sweet like McDonald’s smoothies” reaction, they loved them.
LifeBar has two locations:
